Hanukkah is often overshadowed by the commercial and religious hulk that is Christmas, and that’s a damn shame. Many years ago, the festival of lights became more present in my life when I met my now ex-husband, and once we had our kids, we began incorporating it into our winter holiday season.

Hanukkah has a lot going for it- latkes (potato pancakes), Gelt (chocolate coins), sufganiyot (jelly donuts) and a shit load of candles. I’m not religious (Jewish or otherwise), but even I can get on board with the story of the rebellious Maccabees.

Now that I am divorced and under no obligation to continue celebrating a religion not officially “mine”, I find that I am more excited than ever to celebrate Hanukkah. I feel a strong pull towards honoring that half of my children’s bloodline, maintaining that connection with our Jewish family and friends and of course, the aforementioned latkes.

When I thought about a table setting that would be simple yet festive, it felt right this year to go with a more traditional color scheme. Simple floral arrangements, gorgeous navy linens and a few herbs mixed in are a great counterpoint to what amounts to a fried food extravaganza.

If you’ll be celebrating the holiday this year (December 10-18), might I suggest this killer Latke recipe, and if you’re not, you should probably just make them anyway.
